Thunder shakes the Trop; Nats call rain delay despite no rain

A tale of two cities. It was the best of times. It was the worst of times.The U.S. capital was at a standstill as the national pastime was threatened by outside, and po sibly even internal, forces. Thousands waited near the capitol building for a threat that never arrived.About 920 miles to the south, a storm raged through St. Petersburg, Fla., as “Florida’s Sunshine City” failed to live up to its name. But even as gale force winds blew outside Tropicana Field and lightning illuminated the night sky over the stadium, there was baseball played.Unfortunately for Red Sox ace, Chris Sale, he surrendered a pair of home runs while allowing four runs on seven hits in a 4-1 lo s to the Rays. Sale did strike out 12, with two walks, but did not get the run support as the Red Sox were limited to five hits.Tropicana Field has a roof. As the teams, and the fans who remained through the delay, waited for a storm system that never came, the game scheduled to begin at 7:05p.m. ET could have been completed by the time the game finally began at 10:10.Nationals manager Dusty Baker apparently did not want to risk a wasted outing by lefty Gio Gonzalez, who is 7-3 with a 2.77 ERA. So, instead of po sibly having Gonzalez pitch for a few innings before a delay, the Nats decided to postpone the game’s start as they monitored a nearby storm system. The delay did not go over well, especially with fans and the Nationals Wikipedia page was briefly modified to say the Nats were a “‘profe sional’ organization of cowards who refuse to perform their job due to fear of embarra sment.”The Pirates and Phillies were delayed about 45 minutes before Pittsburgh’s eventual 6-3 win, but it actually rained in Philadelphia.The home team is in control of weather-related delays prior to the game’s start. The team’s decision to delay Thursday’s game for rain that never really arrived, outside of a light sprinkle, forced many to waste hundreds of dollars.Kyle Schwarber returned for the Cubs in Thursday’s 11-2 lo s to the Brewers, but went 0 for 4 with two strikeouts and committed an error in left field during Milwaukee’sseven-run third inning.Highlights The Brewers quietly have one of the best middle-infield tandems in baseball in second baseman Jonathan Villar and shortstop Orlando Arcia.
